Strategies to improve vaccination data capture in Uganda’s health information management system

Addressing the issue of zero-dose children in Mukono District, Uganda, requires a comprehensive approach to improving the capture and reporting of immunization data. The challenges posed by discrepancies in population denominators, delayed reporting, and non-participation of private health facilities in the national HMIS underscore the need for targeted interventions.
Implementing strategies to track children across the HMIS, such as engaging community health workers, making phone call reminders, leveraging innovative technologies like the DHIS2 tracker, and facilitating better information sharing between health facilities, is crucial for accurate data collection and reporting. Additionally, incentivizing private health facilities to report routine immunization data through training, provision of necessary equipment, and development of user-friendly interfaces will enhance data accuracy and help reconcile discrepancies.
